Formula in Plain Words
A 16:9 TV is about 0.4903 times its diagonal in height. Converting inches to centimetres gives the TV height, the centre is placed at eye height, and the bottom and top are half the TV height below and above that centre.
Worked Example
For a 55 inch TV and a seated eye height of 105 cm, the TV height is 68.49 cm, the bottom is 70.76 cm and the top is 139.24 cm from the floor.
FAQs
Should the centre always match eye height? For a main seating position, yes. For a TV watched from bed or above a fireplace, you may need a higher position and a tilting mount.
What if my TV is not 16:9? The height factor changes for other aspect ratios, so this tool is best for standard 16:9 screens.
Do I need to allow space for the mount? Yes. Check the mount and TV instructions for clearance and fixings before drilling.
