Use the free ACA Affordability Calculator 2026 on ToolVexa to compare a health plan premium with your household income. Enter your income and monthly premium, press Calculate, and your annual cost and affordability check appear straight away.
How to Use
Enter your annual household income in dollars and the monthly premium for the plan you are checking, then press Calculate. The result shows the yearly premium, the premium as a percentage of income, and whether it is within the 8.5% benchmark used here.
Formula in Plain Words
First, multiply the monthly premium by 12 to get the annual premium. Then divide that annual premium by annual household income and multiply by 100 to get the percentage of income spent on the premium. A result at or below 8.5% is shown as within the benchmark.
Worked Example
For an income of $60,000 and a premium of $350 a month, the annual premium is $350 times 12, which is $4,200. Dividing $4,200 by $60,000 gives 0.07, or 7.0% of income, which is within the 8.5% benchmark.
FAQs
Is this a legal affordability ruling?
No. This is a simple benchmark check for planning only. It is not a legal determination, and official rules and personal circumstances may change the result.
Should I include subsidies?
Enter the premium you actually expect to pay. If a subsidy lowers what you pay, use that lower amount for a result that matches your own cost.
What if my premium is above 8.5%?
It means the premium takes a larger share of income than this benchmark. You may want to compare other plans or check what help may be available, rather than treating this result as a final decision.
