Use the free Aesthetic Calculator on ToolVexa for a simple, numbers-based guide to visual proportion. Enter a longer side and a shorter side, and compare their ratio with the golden ratio, 1.618.
How to Use
Enter the longer measurement first and the shorter measurement second, then press Calculate. Use the same unit for both sides, such as centimetres or pixels, so the ratio is meaningful.
Formula in Plain Words
Divide the longer side by the shorter side to get the ratio. Then start from 100 and subtract 40 points for every 1.0 that the ratio is away from 1.618. A ratio exactly at 1.618 gives 100, and the score never goes below zero.
Worked Example
With a longer side of 161.8 and a shorter side of 100, the ratio is 161.8 divided by 100, which is 1.618. The distance from the golden ratio is zero, so the aesthetic score is 100.0 out of 100.
FAQs
Is this a judgement of beauty?
No. This is only a simple proportion guide. Beauty depends on many things that numbers cannot capture.
What if my ratio is far from 1.618?
It simply means the shape is not close to this one classic proportion. Many pleasing designs use other ratios.
Can I use any units?
Yes, as long as both sides use the same unit, because the units cancel out when you divide.
