AHA PREVENT Calculator

Use the free AHA PREVENT Calculator on ToolVexa for a simplified estimate of cardiovascular risk from age, blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking and diabetes.

How to Use

Enter your age, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol, choose whether you smoke or have diabetes, then press Calculate.

Formula in Plain Words

The simplified score adds age times 0.2, systolic blood pressure times 0.05 and total cholesterol times 0.02, subtracts HDL cholesterol times 0.1, and adds 5 points each for smoking and for diabetes. The result is capped between 0% and 100%.

Worked Example

With age 55, systolic blood pressure 130, total cholesterol 200, HDL cholesterol 50, no smoking and no diabetes, the score is 11 + 6.5 + 4 – 5 = 16.5%.

FAQs

Is this the official AHA PREVENT equation?

No. This is a simplified estimate for learning and planning only; it is not the official clinical PREVENT model and it is not a medical diagnosis.

Why does higher HDL lower the score?

In this simplified model, higher HDL cholesterol is treated as protective, so it is subtracted from the score.

What should I do with a high result?

Talk to a clinician about your blood pressure, cholesterol and other risk factors rather than relying on this estimate alone.
